this year kind of sucked. every project i worked on ended up being months late or never released, i feel like i started drawing even slower and im gettin some sort of adult adhd. but i did accomplish SOME stuff, lets go through a little 2013 year end recap for me (in somewhat chronological order, the pics are not in order)
January, Me and Box were asked to pitch a cartoon for a popular official youtube channel. about wrestlers in space. it was rejected.
i finished a 16 page kids comic called OLLIE THE ELEPHANT, where the other cartoonist that was doing the back-up story just kind of never did and it was never released. the pages are just sitting collecting dust.
me and Josh made a short lived webcomic called Stop Cartoonists. truth zone made fun of it.
i released my first non-antholgy/non-mine Yeah Dude Comic in 3 Fates by Emma Louthan
I then released a screenprinted box set of 11 comics cementing my ‘seriousness’ in being a publisher. 1 of them being my 16 page Diabolik bootleg comic.
i followed up shortly with Catburglar Cream by Laura Knetzger
Josh Bayer, Box Brown, and Me taught a workshop at SAW memorial day weekend and got tattoos together for male bonding experiences.
At the CAKE after-party in chicago, I played music with Zak Sally and Davitt Terrell while Josh Bayer tried to sing/talk. That was really special because we played in front of just about all of my contemporary cartoonist peers.
I helped make a skateboard quarter pipe on the 4th of July at my studio. i also did various other construction projects like make a weird attic to store old Bayer paintings, shelving for my VHS, and made a fake wall.
we also bought a projector for the place, which ended up with us having movie nights in november (Purple Rain, Repo Man, and Roadhouse were all shown)
i threw a comic book BBQ in July with Frank Santoro. It was just me trying to redefine what a ‘comic book event’ is. it was so much fun.
i finally finished my tabloid XENO-KAIJU (4 months later then expected). my best looking comic ever. I’m super proud of this.
i made a short art zine called Time Distortion Modulator Schematics Manual
I helped put out Emma’s 3 Fates Tend to the Family Tree b-side zine and Tara Booth’s Clayboy
I came out with a limited editon VHS.
I played music more ‘seriously’ as in we made a band name and pressed record a couple times when we practiced as BOOTLEG DOG
I did a 24-Hour comic, called JUSTICE COP in october.
I put out a Josh Burggraf zine called Thinking About the Afterwards, which was just me being more jealous of my friends work.
me and Bayer came out with a comic together about Stan Lee/Steve Ditko called The Greater Good for SAW, its still available for order through their fundraiser!
i made a few images for Ranch Records that are supposed to be printed on shirts and tote bags last fall. still not made (not my fault though!).
i was in just a few anthologies, namely Suspect Device 3, a couple issues of Future Shock (i think 4 and 6?), and a french zine called Kluster. i also noticed people stopped inviting me to be in anthologies this year/i stopped trying to be in anthologies unless specifically asked too.
i taught over 100 kids this year! my teaching career has oddly enough taken off and i found myself teaching more and more often.
thats about all i did most this year in the ‘artsy/comic’ category. i also watched conan and akira on vhs equally about 10 times each. played streets of rage on sega genesis probably over a 100 of times, enough to where i can beat it on the hardest mode without using a continue. i constantly 2nd guessed everything i did and got frustrated with my life really easily. i didnt get a haircut once this year and my mane is at its peak length right now. i also moved into a much more ‘adult’ apartment and got rid of 1 of my cats. next year will be better, i swear.
